47. Colonial Connecticut

  1. See how our colonial forefathers lived. Start at Putnam Cottage (c.1692) in Greenwich, I-95 Exit 3. It was a meeting place for local leaders during the Revolutionary War.
  2. Henry Whitfield State Museum (c.1639) in Guilford, I-95 Exit 58, is New England's oldest stone house. Visit the herb garden and museum shop. Tour the Thomas Griswold House (c.1774) and the Hyland House (1690) on Boston Street
  3. then take scenic Rte. 77 north through Durham to Rte. 9 north in Middletown and I-91 north to Old Wethersfield Exit 26. The Buttolph-Williams House (c.1710) is a colonial mansion with period furnishings. Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum in Wethersfield comprises three, 18th century homes.
  4. The Noah Webster House in West Hartford, I-84 Exit 41, is the restored colonial birthplace of the author of the first American dictionary.
